As many Bromyardians know the Bromyard Hop Festival has become one of the town’s favourite annual events, and attracts large crowds each year. In previous years an estimated 3000 visitors lined the pavements to watch teams of four runners labour up and down Broad St and High St as they took part in the unique World Championship Hop Pocket Race. The much-loved Race has all the hallmarks of a ‘traditional’ event, but in fact it was specially invented for the first Hop Festival back in 2011. The organisers of this year’s Hop Festival and Races had difficulties in organising an event for 2016 for a variety of reasons and regrettably announced earlier this year that there would be no Hop Festival in 2016, however they wish to keep the idea alive as they are already planning the next festival in 2017.
Sadly no local adult or youth teams were entered, but The Queens Arms entered 3 children’s teams which were The Queens Lions, The Queens Crusaders and The Queens Flyers. The teams ran a very enthusiastic 300m lap of the main ring, and then volunteered to run another lap! After a close finish the winners were The Queens Flyers. All the competitors received a certificate and were treated to a free ride at the Gala Fair.
